THE EFFECTS OF PICTURE NAMING DIFFICULTIES ON MEMORY UNDER DIFFERENT KINDS OF ENCODING

The study-test paradigm was used to investigate differences of memory performance among free encoding, visual encoding and verbal encoding. The results indicated that (1)degrees of difficulty effect was observed, the memory performance of hard-named pictures is better than the easy-named pictures; (2)hard-named features are more likely selected to be rehearsed so as to remember the whole picture. (3) the recognition accuracies of the easy-named pictures rather than the hard-named after the verbal encoding is better than the visual encoding.
