FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES: PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES

With the passage of the new family code in 1988, from 1988 to 2000 it is estimated that over 44,000 men and women have filed nullification of their marriage in the Philippines. This new Family Code also requires a Mental Health Professionals (a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist) to serve as an expert witness in Court. Clinical psychologists in the Philippines now have to face many problems as well as challenges in their involvement with the family courts. The major problems and challenges are described: the shortage of clinical psychologists, relevance, the extension of services, movement out of their clinics, and the threats of the adversarial system.
