Yan, C. W. and Tang, S. K., The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Elder Abuse and neglect is the latest development in the field of domestic violence and is gaining considerable attention from researchers worldwide. Previous studies indicate that elder abuse is not uncommon, however, few studies have been conducted in Chinese societies. The present study aims to explore the phenomena of elder abuse in the Hong Kong Chinese population. Specific objectives of the study include: (1) to establish preliminary estimates on proclivity to abusive behaviors on Chinese elderly in Hong Kong; (2) to explore the potential abuser's characteristics; and (3) to explore the association of proclivity to elder abuse with abuser's attitudes towards women and endorsement of filial piety. Approximately 500 participants residing in Hong Kong will be sampled using convenient sampling. Results and limitations will be discussed.
