Close relationship is characterized by positive and intense affect toward parners. This would lead one to accept inappropriate request from one's partner to some extent, albeit not unconditionally. Because such tendency is prevalent among Japanese, people sometimes expect their partner in a close relationship to accept their inappropriate behavior or request. This expectation is named Amae in Japanese. In my presentation, I will delineate the concept of Amae based upon empirical evidence. Then, I will discuss the function of Amae in Japanese society.
