MENTAL HEALTH OF THE ELDERLY IN BEIJING URBAN AREA AND THE ANALYSIS OF ITS RELATIVE FACTORS

The purposes of this study were to investigate mental health of the elderly in Beijing urban area and analyze its relative factors. 1010 subjects from Beijing urban area were tested with "Mental Health Questionnaire of the Elderly", which was established by authors. It consisted of 5 subscales: Personality, Emotion, Social Adaptation, Interpersonal Communication and Cognition. The main results as follows: 1.The age difference was not significant. 2.The sex difference is significant. 3.Mental health was related to educational level. 4.There is no effect of marriage on mental health. 5.High correlations were found between total or component scores and health satisfaction, life satisfaction, economy satisfaction, parents- children relationship, husband-wife relationship, numbers of diseases and critical life events. It was further revealed with stepwise regression analysis that health satisfaction and culture had significant effect on the total score. As above mentioned, the mental health of the elderly in Beijing urban area was well. Intervention for increasing educational level may enhance the cultural disposition. Education of mental health may strengthen the consciousness of mental self care and improve mental health level of the elderly, in order to achieve healthy aging.
