Tae, K., Konan Women's University and Matusaka, M., Kinki Central Hospital, Japan
This research is aimed at comparing and studying the fatigue from shift work under four different conditions(Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the irregular two shift roster and Stage 3 and Stage 4 of the routine three-shift foster) by performing the UCHIDA-KRAEPELIN Psychodiagnostic Test and employing the data obtained from the tests as objective fatigue indices. The 22 female nurses were divided into two groups, each group consisting of 11. Those who have shift under Stage 1 and Stage 3 underwent the UCHIDA-KRAEPELIN Psychodiagnostic Test at 6:00 p.m., when they have finished their day- shift, while the test for those who belong to the night-shift of Stage 2 and Stage 4 was performed at 4:00 a.m. The test consists of two parts. In the first half of the test, 15 rows of numeral are printed in a test sheet, with 80 to 120 of numbers in single figures placed at random in each row. Examinees do addition of the numerals in each row consecutively for 15 minutes according to the specified procedure. There is five-minute intermission after the first 15-minutes test, and then the examinees get to second part of the test for another 15 minutes in the same procedure. The analysis of variance has revealed a significant main effect of the four conditions, but neither a difference between the two groups nor an interaction effect has been detected.
