Salanova, M., Jaume I University, Agut, S., University of Murcia and Peir, J.M., University of Valncia, Spain
This study examines the factorial structure of the Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey (MBI-GS), and the Engagement Inventory (Schaufeli, Salanova, Gonzlez-Roma & Bakker, 2002), as well as the relationship between burnout and engagement. In a sample of 324 Spanish employees from Tourism sector, results confirmed the original three-factor structure of the MBI-GS (exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy) as well as the the three-factor structure of engagement (vigor, dedication, and absorption). Finally, regarding the relationship between burnout and engagement confirms the previous research, that it, a model with two latent factors including: (1) exhaustion and cynicism ('core of burnout'); (2) all three engagement scales plus professional efficacy fitted better to data than a model with two higher-order factors - 'burnout' and 'engagement'.
